The Hon. Minister of Women affairs, Her Excellency, Dame Pauline Tallen held virtual conference meetings with State commissioners of Women Affairs, Civil Society Organisations, wives of state governors and other vital stakeholders to chart the way forward and  develop a roadmap to curb the menace of rising cases of sexual abuse against women and girls and other Gender Based Violence in Nigeria.

At the meeting, participants unanimously resolved as follows;

  1. Declaration of State of Emergency on Gender Based Violence in Nigeria.
  2. To develop Media Strategy to sustain public outrage.
  3. Sustain the Gender Based Violence Campaign momentum on the streets.
  4. Domesticating and Implementation of Violence Against Person Prohibition (VAPP) Act in all 36 states. To sanction states that are yet to.
  5. To work with Legal Aid Council for pro bono services.
  6. To make use of the National GBV data collection tool for effective management of Data/Records of GBV for appropriate intervention.
  7. Establishment of GBV cases situation room.
  8. Establishment of special courts to prosecute offenders without delay.
  9. Establishment of safe homes in every state.
  10. More collaboration by Federal Ministry of Women Affairs with the 36 States Commissioners of Women Affairs to sustain the momentum at State level.
  11. More partnership with Civil Society Organisation by the 36 States Commissioners of Women Affairs.
  12. Training and orientation of state commissioners for women affairs on GBV.
  13. More Funding of Ministry of Women Affairs budget for optimal service delivery.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Participants observed a minute of silence in memory of rape victims including late Vera Uwaila Omozuwa who was recently raped to death.
