BRIEF ON WOMEN AND GENDER AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT
INTRODUCTION
- The Women And Gender Affairs Department was carved out of the old Women Affairs Department in 2014 and is one of the key operational Departments of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. It is charged with the responsibility of promoting women’s advancement and coordinating the sustenance of a gender equality perspective in the plans, projects and programmes of the Federal Government.

To achieve the set goals, the Department works in close collaboration with Gender Desk Officers in line Ministries and Agencies, Women focused Non-Governmental Organizations and Cooperative Groups, United Nations Agencies, Civil Society Groups, Legislatures and International Development Agencies.
Divisions, Branches and Unit
- The Department consists of two divisions and a Unit. The scope, content and responsibilities of the divisions, their branches and Unit are:
- Women education, empowerment, training and organisations (WEO) Division:
- Initiates and implements programmes for Women’s Education, Empowerment and Training (WETR);
- Administers National Women Focused Non-Governmental organizations.
- Supervises the WETR and WNGO Branches.
- Women education, empowerment and training (WETR) Branch:
- Initiates, Implements, Regulate and standardises programmes for Women formal, informal Education and Training on Skill Acquisition, Staff Training and Welfare.
- Women focused non-governmental organizations (WNGO) Branch
- Initiates, Implements Programmes, regulates and standardize the operations of National Women Focused NGOs;
- Processes NGOs for recognition;
- Capacity Building for NGOs.
Women’s Rights and Gender Development (WRGD) Division:
- Initiates, implements and Coordinate Programmes in the areas of Women’s Rights, Protection and participation;
- All Gender Development issues concerning Women;
- Supervises the Women’s Rights (WR) and Gender Development (GD) branches.
- Initiates, implements and Coordinate Programmes in the areas of Women’s Rights, Protection and participation;
- Women’s Rights (WR) Branch
- Initiates and Implements programmes for the protection, promotion of Women’s Rights;
- Promote and support women’s participation in politics, leadership, governance and development process.
- Gender Development (GD) Branch:
Initiates and implements programmes in the areas of:
- Care and Social Support Services- Material and financial Support;
- Gender based Violence especially Violence Against Women (VAW);
- Survival and Livelihood – Health, Vesico Vagina Fistula (VVF), maternal Mortality etc.;
- Provides and strengthening support systems for poor women; and
- Administration of Shelters for Women victims of gender based violence.
- Women and Gender Policy Management Unit (WPMU)
WPMU: Serves as the Secretariat for the Women and Gender Affairs Department.
- The Unit Coordinates all activities, reports compilation of the divisions and branches;
- Coordinates Periodic Reports and preparation of Budgets;
- Organizes Conference of Directors of Women Affairs in Nigeria;
- Coordinates and updates as well as the Nominal Roll schedule of duties;
- Handling of Capital projects; and
- Serve as Information and Data Bank of the Department
