Women & Gender Affairs Department

 

The Women Affairs Department is one of the key operational Department charged with the responsibility of promoting women’s advancement at both National and International levels.

The Department undertakes the coordination of all activities that relate to the advancement active participation of Nigerian women in National Development and overall gender mainstreaming in all aspects of public life. It promotes policy formulation and programme implementation aimed at integrating women into all sectors of development in order to achieve government’s targets and intentions.

To achieve the set goals, the Department works in close collaboration with Gender Desk Officers in line Ministries and Agencies, Women Non-Governmental Organisations and Cooperative Groups, United Nations, Civil Society Groups, Legislatures and International Development Agencies.

In order to effectively carry out its functions, the Department is divided into two divisions, namely:

  • Human Resources and Capacity Building/Women Organisations (HRCB/WO).

  • Economic Services and Women cooperatives (ES&WC).

 

HUMAN RESOURCES AND CAPACITY BUILDING/WOMEN ORGANISATIONS DIVISION (HRCB/WO)

  • This Division has the mandate to carry out the following:

  • Promoting actions and activities to improve the education and development of women in civil, political, social-cultural and economic sectors, etc.;

  • Dealing with issues on motherhood, women’s health our maternal mortality;

  • Organizing and co-ordinating capacity building programmes and training;

  • Coordinating the development and implementation of the NGP;

  • Supervision of our six zonal political empowerment offices;

  • Establishing and maintaining guidance and counseling referral and remedial services;

  • Mobilizing and administering of subventions and grants to National Governmental Organizations;

  • Registration of women non-governmental organisations;

  • Management of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (WTF);

  • Providing Technical Assistance to Women Focused Non Governmental Organisations;

  • Monitoring and evaluating of projects;

  • Implementation of Regional/Internal instrument on Women Advancements e.g. Beijing Platform for Action, CEDAW, AU Protocol on the Rights of Women etc.;

  • Coordination of programmes and projects on human rights of women, armed conflict and violence against women;

  • Management of Shelter (Temporary Shelter for female victims of violence);

  • Supervision of the 100 Women Lobby Group;

  • Capacity building for all women groups;

  • Welfare/support to indigent women

  • Mobilizing Non-Governmental partners to achieve the objectives of National and International treaties on Women.

 

ECONOMIC SERVICES AND WOMEN CO-OPERATIVES DIVISION

This Division co-ordinates all economic and co-operative activities to enhance the economic development of women in Nigeria.
 

 

FUNCTIONS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING

  • Promoting agricultural activities;

  • Organizing and co-ordinating entrepreneurship training for women in the area of marketing, packaging, food processing etc.;

  • Encouraging the formation of women co-operative societies;

  • Assisting in preparing and analysis of feasibility studies on cooperative projects for women;

  • Encouraging income generating and capacity building activities among women through the following:
    (a) Arts and crafts;
    (b) Home and Cottage Industries;
    (c) Development of skills acquisition centres
    (d) Other wealth generating activities.

  • Encouraging participation in National and International Trade Fairs and Exhibitions;

  • Management of Women Fund for Economic Empowerment (WOFEE) and Business Development Fund for Women (BUDFOW);

  • Promoting savings and investments among women through cooperative;

  • Soliciting assistance, loans and credit from financial institutions for women co-operatives;

  • Disseminating information and providing technical assistance to women cooperatives.
